Origins and development
Designed by garden director Paul Viktor Niemeyer, the cemetery opened on 1 November 1872. The central chapel dates from 1867. The roundel near it, with the graves of Gustav Hasselbach and Friedrich Bötticher, forms a particular historic focus.
The cemetery was established in 1872. The cemetery is in Leipziger Straße district, at Leipziger Straße 47, 39112 Magdeburg. Its area is approximately 18 hectares.
Design and present-day character
The park-like South Cemetery lies directly on Leipziger Straße. Graves of mayors and honorary citizens near the central chapel recall Magdeburg’s history; a natural burial area has complemented its options since 2015.
Read this character description together with the development of Magdeburg South Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
Connect the account with the grounds
The cemetery map contains 11 named places for Magdeburg South Cemetery. Among them are Entrance 4, Cemetery chapel, Communication and events centre. Use these names to relate the historical account to locations visible during a visit, without assuming that every historical feature has its own marker.
